The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
