Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
