Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any significant honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
